Event Details
Remember the fallen heroes of the Australian and British prisoners-of-war (POW) who endured the notorious Death Marches from Sandakan to Ranau in 1945. Many lives perished during these Death Marches, at the end of the war, only six survived. Commemorating 75 Years after the Sandakan Death Marches on 15 August 2020. Lest We Forget.
The POW were brought to Sandakan from Singapore by the Japanese to build a military airstrip in 1942. All were placed at the Sandakan POW Camp, which is now known as the Sandakan Memorial Park. At the end of January 1945, the first of the three Death Marches took place, where the POW were force-marched from Sandakan to Ranau. A torturous march for the POW, as they were not only malnourished but also ill-treated by their captors. Many lives perished during these Death Marches, at the end of the war, only six survived.
Commemorating 75 Years after the Sandakan Death Marches on 15 August 2020. Lest We Forget.
